The keynote speaker for the evening will be Dr. Jody Sowell. Dr. Jody Sowell serves as the seventh president in the 156-year history of the Missouri Historical Society. Though new to the position – he was appointed in July 2022 – Jody is hardly new to MHS or to St. Louis. He has worked at MHS in a number of roles for 18 years and has lived in St. Louis for 21. In addition to his work at MHS, Jody appears every week on KMOV’s CBS Sunday Morning in his popular STL History Minute segments and teaches at Saint Louis University, where he also earned his doctorate in American Studies.
Dr. Sowell's presentation, “I am St. Louis, and I Don’t Believe We’ve Met” is a fast-paced tour through St. Louis history. Audiences will hear some stories they know and many stories they don’t. All the stories will feature the richness, diversity, and complexity that makes St. Louis such a fascinating place.

"St. Louis County has begun developing a new Comprehensive Plan for the first time in 40 years, providing a strategic framework for how our community intends to grow and evolve over the next 25 years. Central to this process is engaging with our municipal partners to discuss the opportunities before us and how we can work together to provide a bright future for our community. We will be presenting at the Municipal League Executive Board meeting on April 18th and will be reaching out to all 87 municipalities in St. Louis County over the next couple of months."

The Park Commission realizes that not all municipalities have professional public works, engineering or parks staff to coordinate construction grant applications and project oversight. This has led, at times, to incomplete or inaccurate applications and delays in completing projects on time and within budget. For this reason, Commission members have adopted a policy requiring any municipality that does not have professional public works, engineering or parks staff, to receive a planning grant before applying for any construction grant. Commissioners believe that this policy will help assure that quality projects can be planned for and implemented in a timely and efficient manner. If you have questions about this policy, please contact the Municipal League staff at [email protected] or 314-726-4747.
Planning grants of up to $10,000 are available to help develop master plans to guide future park developments or for construction specific project planning. The planning grant applications are available throughout the year and can be found here. If you are considering a project for next year, it is recommended that you start the planning process as soon as possible.
