SUMMARY:CHRISTMAS DAY
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.  People celebrate Christmas Day in many ways. In the days or even weeks before Christmas Day\, many people decorate their homes and gardens with lights\, Christmas trees and much more. It is common to organize a special meal\, often consisting of turkey and a lot of other festive foods\, for family or friends and exchange gifts with them. Children\, in particular\, often receive a lot of gifts from their parents and other relatives and the mythical figure Santa Claus. This has led to Christmas Day becoming an increasingly commercialized holiday\, with a lot of families spending a large part of their income on gifts and food. \nMany Sunday schools\, churches and communities organize special events. These can include decorating the neighborhood or a shopping mall\, putting up a Christmas tree and planning a Nativity display\, concert or performance. A lot of plays and songs have a aspect of Christmas as a theme. Some groups arrange meals\, shelter or charitable projects for people without a home or with very little money.

SUMMARY:League Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:November 29 Meeting at Fenton City Hall\nThe November meeting will be hosted by the City of Fenton at City Hall located at 625 New Smizer Mill Rd\, Fenton\, MO 63026; (MAP)\, start time 6:30 PM.  The meeting is being held on the 5th Thursday due to Thanksgiving. \nProgram:  Jeanie Sanders is an Education and Technology Specialist for General Code which supports more than 3\,000 local governments with codification and legal support. \nJeanie leads the customer education initiatives for eCode360 and MapLink.  She focuses on     helping municipal employees understand how to get the most out of their online Code services. Because of her constant interaction with our customers base\, Jeanie frequently acts as the “voice of the customer” in product development projects for General Code. \nJeanie will demonstrate the benefits of connecting municipal GIS mapping systems to zoning code systems.  This new technology code can provide answers to the most commonly asked questions of municipal staff: “Where can I open my business?”or “What can I do with my     property?”  The Interactive Zoning Map is a tool that facilitates a full understanding of what is defined in the zoning code without having to comb through the traditionally text heavy documents. \n

SUMMARY:COLUMBUS DAY
DESCRIPTION:Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these\, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature\, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21\, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado\, Massachusetts\, New Jersey\, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut\, Nebraska\, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894\, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers\, and on June 28 of that year\, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. \n

SUMMARY:4TH OF JULY - INDEPENDENCE DAY
DESCRIPTION:The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941\, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd\, 1776\, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence\, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence\, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day\, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence\, with festivities ranging from fireworks\, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

SUMMARY:MEMORIAL DAY
DESCRIPTION:Memorial Day\, originally called Decoration Day\, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966\, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. \nRegardless of the exact date or location of its origins\, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan\, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic\, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May\, 1868\, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers\, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion\, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city\, village and hamlet churchyard in the land\,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day\, as he called it\, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. \nOn the first Decoration Day\, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery\, and 5\,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20\,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. \nThe first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day\, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). \nIt is now observed in almost every state on the last Monday in May with Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 – 363). This helped ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays\, though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19th in Texas; April 26th in Alabama\, Florida\, Georgia\, and Mississippi; May 10th in South Carolina; and June 3rd (Jefferson Davis’ birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.
